Study Abroad with the Hargis Leadership Institute
Leadership is everywhere; you can be everywhere, too.
The Hargis Leadership Institute offers a myriad of leadership development opportunities
for OSU students. Whether you are already involved in an HLI co-curricular or scholarship
program, or you've never heard of us until now, there is a study abroad opportunity
for you. We have elevated our leadership development by offering the chance to study
abroad internationally. Through prioritizing top-tier leadership development, we are
now raising the bar by providing culturally enriching travel opportunities to broaden
students' depth of leadership understanding and knowledge to better form them into
life-giving community leaders.
Developing Global Leadership Perspectives (GS 4200)
South Africa
Lead with purpose in South Africa. This interdisciplinary program blends cultural
immersion with leadership development, offering a deep dive into the nation's rich
history. Engage with local communities, explore iconic landmarks, and enhance your
academic and personal journey. Open to all majors.
Annual McKnight Scholars (UNIV 3113)
South Africa
One significant perk of the McKnight Scholarship program is that it offers scholarship
recipients the opportunity to study abroad. The program offers one fully funded opportunity
to travel with peers within the program. During the summer of 2025, the McKnight scholars
will focus on leadership as it was seen and used in South Africa. Students will visit
sites in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Kruger National Parl. Students will begin developing
a global leadership mindset, and engage with culturally diverse perspectives on ethical
leadership. During the course, students will encounter examples of ethical leadership
in the areas of government, history, art, literature, education, culture, international
relations, and service in international contexts.This opportunity is exclusive to students enrolled in the McKnight Scholarship program.
Annual President's Leadership Council (UNIV 3123)
Zimbabwe, Africa
Members of the President's Leadership Council (PLC) at OSU have the opportunity to
travel to Zimbabwe, Africa and learn from OSU Alumna, Dr. Tererai Trent. During their
time in Zimbabwe, students will engage in seminars with Dr. Trent and interact with
her work in rural villages, all while gaining insights into global and cultural perspectives
on ethical leadership. Additionally, students will visit the breathtaking Victoria
Falls waterfall, and tour the towns of Harare and Matau. This opportunity is exclusive to students enrolled in the President's Leadership Council.
